Glock released the Gen 4 pistol in early 2010, which addressed the frame durability issue and made minor exterior changes. Almost seven years later we were introduced to the next generation in the Glock line. The differences of Gen 5 are equally minor on the surface, but there are interesting changes that are not immediately obvious.
Glock 19 Gen5 9mm Pistol With Cerakote Gold Slide
I have been using my Gen 5 Glock 19 since late August and have put about 4,000 rounds through it. I ran it for static accuracy and in dynamic protection exercises from obscurity, with and without light attached to the rail. I also spent time taking it apart, familiarizing myself with internal changes and parts replacement issues (because Glocks are a fun hobby kit).
For the most part, the Gen 5 Glock 19 is just a Glock 19, but there are interesting and odd changes that warrant testing. There are also some caveats that early buyers should know. I hope to cover most of them here, but remember that these reviews are from less than 2 months of use, several times a week. A lot of time can tell a lot of stories.
Most of this review will deal with the differences of the Gen 5 from previous models and specific user issues of the Gen-5 (for holding, shooting, accessories, etc.). For a thorough review of the Glock 19 I recommend you read my Glock 19 Gen 4 review here ("Review: Glock 19 Gen 4 - After 80,000 rounds").
Note that the photos shown in this article do not depict factory new pistols. Instead, these are pictures of the pistol of someone who uses it hard a few days each week. They were beaten a little.
G19 G5 Upper Glock 19 Gen 5 Complete Upper Slide Assembly
The first and best reason to consider this pistol is that it is a Glock 19; Truly the best machine gun ever made. It is large enough to be a duty rifle and offers great performance accuracy and magazine capacity while being small and light enough for everyday covert operations.
Moreover, one cannot ignore the excellent reliability record offered by Glock pistols. From my own experience, I have put over 100,000 rounds through Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock pistols and the only malfunctions I have ever experienced were due to non-Glock replacement parts and Cerakote job failures. With stock parts, the Glock pistol is virtually flawless in operation, even under extreme conditions.
Exclusive to Gen 5, you may want to consider the new Glock 19 for interesting reasons. First, now the sliding lock lever is two sides. So, if you are left handed, turn the mag to the right and you have a perfectly left handed pistol. For those of you who like Glock pistols, but don't grip thumb grooves, the Gen 5 comes with a flat front strap. No customization required.
Gen 5 brings new things to the shooting experience, with 2 notable exceptions. The Glock 19 has always been a smooth-shooting, easy-to-grip and accurate pistol that outperforms 99.9% of women. What's new in this experience is the introduction of a new Gen 5 tank and a flat front step.
Legion Precision Glock 19 Gen 5 Duty Cut Slide
Shooting a lot with Gen 3 and 4 Glocks, I find the lack of a thumb groove noticeable. I used to have a grip filled with my strong arm and now It feels different. I did not find the difference to be bad, but to hold my thumb Completely and I missed it with this pistol. I know a lot of people never liked them, so a lot of people will be happy with this change.
Glock 19 Gen 5 after training "wounded wing" mud. It was thrown on the ground dozens of times.
The new barrel's rifling profile is set for twice the accuracy at longer distances (4" group at 50 yards, Glock claims). I'm not good enough to get a 4" group at 50 yards, but I found my group at 25. The yardage is significantly smaller with the Gen 5 than with my Gen 4 shooting. I can't say for sure, but I assume it's because of the more accurate barrel.
The Gen 5 actuator may feel a little better than the Gen 4, but that's subjective and hard for me to say. The Gen 5 trigger assembly is set up like a Glock 43 which is completely different from the Gen 4. It has a "New York" impact spring that uses polymer spring support and compression spring (instead of An expansion spring that hangs crosswise the bar). I tried the 3.5lb connection and didn't feel any difference in pressure weight. So I tried to connect 2lb and got the 4.5lb press that I expected in my pistol. Interesting

Most of the 9mm bullets I put through the gun are 115gr bullets, but I have run rounds from Federal Premium 147gr Hydra-Shok JHP, Spear Gold Dot 124gr +P GDHP, Federal Premium HST or JHP 124gr. Critical Defense 115gr, and Hornady Critical Duty 135gr... all perform flawlessly.
I have never had that experience with my Gen 5 Glock 19 in ~4,000 rounds. The only noticeable problem I can report is that within the first 1000 rounds I sometimes feel a little irritated because the action is on the first round of the magazine. Instead of the standard "chunk" sound/feel while sliding into the battery, there is the occasional "ka-chunk" that feels like a slight delay with the round chamber. This anomaly disappears after about 1000 rounds and never affects the performance of the gun. Each round was chambered and fired.
Like all other Glock pistols, the trigger guard of the Gen 5 G19 is too angled for a transfer grip and is usually uncomfortable for the middle finger of a strong hand when shooting. Therefore, I recommend that every Glock pistol should have a Dremel tool attached to the side and bottom of the trigger guard to easily create a rounded and tapered profile there. Other than this problem, the Glock 19 is very comfortable. There are some who disagree and find that the G19 or Glock pistols are fine without this slight modification. With this modification I find the Gen 5 Glock 19 very comfortable. Without it, there is no use. Personally, I would never own a Glock that wasn't configured like this. Would definitely make a nice Gen 6 upgrade.
The Glock 19 is not fast at all and is very easy for people to manipulate recoil. The magazine release position is good and I only changed my grip slightly to accommodate my average hand to trigger it (as I do in any pistol). Even with Glock's minimal lock-lock lever, my grip often interfered with the lever and I found that the pistol would not open on the last round of the magazine. It's not the gun's fault at all. It was all me.

Although it is compact, the Glock 19 is larger than some of its counterparts. However, with a good and well-made holster, it is easily hidden in many positions on your belt, inside or outside the belt. I carry a lighted Glock 19 in the attached position every day and never have a problem printing.
